No duty room, no attached washroom and no locks… IMA’s biggest survey on the safety of women doctors after the Kolkata rape-murder case

Most women doctors feel unsafe during their night shift duties, so unsafe that some have even felt the need to carry weapons for self-defense. This has come to light in a study by the Indian Medical Association (IMA).

IMA said that one-third of its doctors included in the study have said that they feel unsafe in night shifts. After the rape and murder of a female trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, IMA conducted an online survey to assess the safety concerns of doctors in night shifts. In this, 45 percent of the people said that duty rooms are not available in night shifts.

IMA claimed that this is India’s largest study on the subject with 3,885 individual responses. The survey involved doctors from more than 22 states, of which 85 per cent were under the age of 35, while 61 per cent were trainees. The survey findings showed that 24.1 per cent of doctors felt unsafe and 11.4 per cent felt very unsafe. The proportion of those feeling unsafe was higher among women.

According to the study, doctors in the age group of 20-30 years had the lowest sense of safety. The survey found that duty rooms are often crowded and do not have adequate facilities such as locking system. It was found that one-third of the available duty rooms did not have attached toilets. “In 53 per cent, the ward/emergency ward was located far from the duty room,” the study said."text-align: justify;">To enhance security, doctors gave some suggestions, including increasing the number of trained security personnel, installing CCTV cameras, ensuring proper lighting, implementing the Central Security Act (CPA), installing alarm systems and providing basic amenities like secure duty rooms. Dr Jayadevan said, ‘This online survey was sent to government and private doctors across India through Google Forms. 3,885 responses were received within 24 hours.’
